Your Impact: Tools from the Waves

The sharp rise in the need for trauma services quickly overwhelmed the Israeli mental health system after October 7th. Support from Greater Washington is directly expanding services to help those in need, making a positive difference in the lives of so many Israelis.

When HaGal Sheli launched their trauma therapy program “Tools from the Waves,” after October 7th, they aimed to open 100 groups and provide therapy and support to 1,500 individuals most affected by the tragedies. With support from you and our community through Federation’s Israel Crisis Relief Fund, they surpassed this goal earlier this summer.

Since October 7th, the urgent need to help Israeli teenagers and young adults confront profound trauma has been undeniable. HaGal Sheli, met this need through an innovative program, which integrates physical activity — specifically surfing — with structured emotional processing. This approach reduces the risk of post-traumatic stress and empowers individuals on their journey to healing. By facing the unique forces of the sea and overcoming the challenge of surfing, participants gain the self-confidence and sense of achievement necessary to tackle equivalent life challenges.

In recognition of their ongoing efforts, Israeli President Isaac Herzog invited HaGal Sheli to his residence, where he awarded them the President’s Volunteering Award for their work in building strength, resilience, and growth across Israeli society since October 7th.

“While this is a tremendous milestone, and we are thankful for the recognition, our mission is more critical than ever, especially given the ongoing situation. This recognition gives us extra motivation to continue our important work.

“We could not have reached this milestone without you!” – Ephy Shapiro, International Partnerships Manager, HaGal Sheli

In addition to HaGal Sheli, support from Greater Washington is providing:

  • State-of-the-art training to increase Israel’s capacity for trauma and mental health care.
  • Mental health services for survivors of sexual violence.
  • IDF soldiers with assistance to overcome combat-related trauma.
  • Much needed financial assistance to displaced families and those seeking respite from violence.
  • And much more.
