A Time to Mourn and A Time to Act

I was grateful to have a shared space on Tuesday night to mourn the devastating murder of six more hostages. It is a privilege for us at Federation and our partners to provide such spaces for our community, and in this moment, it felt essential. As I looked around the room, I saw a community in deep pain, but also deeply committed to action. We are grieving those mercilessly torn from us and holding those still in captivity in our hearts. And we will not be sidelined by our grief, because there is still much work to be done.

We will honor Hersh, Eden, Ori, Alex, Carmel, and Almog, of blessed memory, by demanding the immediate and safe release of the 101 hostages still in Gaza. We will honor them by building a strong and vibrant Jewish community here and in Israel. Am Yisrael Chai (the nation of Israel lives).

More below on your impact in Israel, our vigil with the Second Gentleman, learnings from Dr. Tal Becker, and our work in this moment.

Shabbat Shalom,
Gil

A Return to Kibbutz Reim: Your Impact in Action. Since October 7th, our community’s support has provided Israelis with the hope, tools, and strength to move forward. In some cases, it continues to help them rebuild. Most recently, our investments in physical security enhancements ensured that members of Kibbutz Reim, which suffered unimaginable loss of life and destruction, could begin returning home with the vital protections they need. Thank you for making this possible.

The Comfort of Community. At the National Vigil for the Hostages, LeElle Slifer, cousin of Carmel Gat, z”l, and Leat Corinne Unger, cousin of Omer Shem Tov, moved us to tears, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff reminded each of us to use our words even when it is hard. Watch the recording.

Learning from Dr. Tal Becker. My planned conversation with Dr. Tal Becker felt even more important following the tragic weekend. Days later, I’m still thinking about his ask that American Jews be brave as a community. I’m curious what you believe this means for our community in this moment. Let me know.

Marking October 7th. In just over a month, our community will gather to commemorate one year since the horrific attacks in Israel that changed our world forever. Join us at The Anthem in Washington, DC to remember the lives lost on October 7th, pray for those still in captivity, honor the survivors, and unite in our communal resilience. Reserve your ticket.
