Elevating the Voices of Hostages, Belonging, and More

Few people are more attuned to the challenges facing Israel and Israelis today than Dr. Tal Becker, Vice President and Senior Faculty at the Shalom Hartman Institute and Legal Adviser of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This coming Tuesday, September 3rd, he’ll join our community in a webinar to share his unique perspective on changing dynamics facing global Jewry and how we can respond in this moment. I hope you’ll join us – you can register here.

Our webinar comes as we approach one year since the events of October 7th. This year has felt alternately like an eon and a moment, and not one of us is the same as we were one year ago. Over the next few weeks, leading up to our gathering this upcoming October 7th, I’ll be using my messages to consider just how much we and our world have changed and to share the stories of those we’ve supported and how your generosity has shaped and saved lives.

This week, read on for stories and updates on the hostages, how our local community continues to support young adults with disabilities, and more.

Shabbat Shalom,
Gil

Hostage Rescued from Gaza. Earlier this week, hostage Farhan al-Qadi was rescued by the IDF in a tunnel beneath Gaza. We are thankful he is in good health and grateful for the continued efforts of Israel and the IDF to bring every hostage home. Our hearts are with the loved ones of the remaining 104 still in captivity as we pray for their return.

Elevating the Voices of Hostage Families Across the Aisle. Like many of you, I tuned into coverage of the RNC and DNC conventions. I was struck by the speeches given by hostage families at both events as well as the chants of “bring them home” by thousands in the crowd. They were true moments of solidarity and strength at a time when bipartisanship is almost impossible to come by.

A Community of Belonging. Federation has teamed up with Matan, a nonprofit helping Jewish communities and leaders create accessible and inclusive environments for people with disabilities, to offer the Lieberman Fellowship. Funded by Jerry and Eileen Lieberman, the fellowship will support Jewish professionals in creating communities that are inclusive to young adults with disabilities.

Marking October 7th. We are just over a month away from coming together on October 7, 2024 to mark one year since Hamas’ attack on Israel. I hope you’ll join us at The Anthem in Washington, DC to remember the lives lost, pray for those still in captivity, honor the survivors, and unite in our communal resilience. Reserve your ticket.
