The Ruth Rales Comcast Kids Reading Network is a tutoring program based in Montgomery County which matches volunteers with individual Grade 2 students. The tutoring builds vocabulary and comprehension in reading using scripted lessons to help at-risk students at a crucial time in their educational development. Tutors can be adults or students from Grade 5 upwards who make a commitment of one hour a week for 30 lessons and to attend two 3-hour training sessions a year. Student Service Learning hours are available. There are over 60 tutoring sites in schools in Gaithersburg, Germantown, Kensington, Olney, Rockville, Silver Spring and Takoma Park, and volunteers work during the week between 8 am and 4:30 pm. To get involved with this wonderful program please call Jewish Volunteer Connection at 1-888-246-1818 or email volunteer@shalomdc.org
